First built in 1928 to span the Dwars River in Ceres, the historic Van Breda Bridge is currently being widened by Amandla Construction. Due for completion in April 2024, the project entails the addition of new pedestrian walkways and wider traffic shoulders on either side of this twin-lane gateway to the town centre. In addition to the widening process, the original concrete deck is being reinforced to handle heavier traffic loads in compliance with current design codes.

Reinforced precast concrete facade panels, manufactured by Concrete Manufacturers Association member, Concrete Units, have been used to dress the external elevations of two U-shaped service shafts which flank the northern entrance of Stellenbosch University’s Civil, Electrical and Electronic Engineering building.

Concrete Manufacturers Association member, Cape Concrete, supplied all the concrete barriers for the international Formula E Championship race which was staged in Cape Town on February 25. Cape Concrete was sub-contracted to Martin and East which won the barrier supply and deployment contract from E-Movement (Pty) Ltd, the authorised promoter of Formula E Cape Town.

Exposed aggregate permeable pavers manufactured by CMA member, CEL Paving Products, have been used for the driveways of Phase 2A of Sandown Square, a secure business park development in Parklands, Cape Town, which has been brought to the market by Milnerton Estates.

South Africa’s largest abalone producer, Abagold, has installed drainage channels constructed with precast concrete sections manufactured by CMA member, Concrete Units. The installation forms part of an upgrade of Abagold’s Bersig Farm, established in Hermanus in 2002 as Abagold’s second abalone farm.

The old bridge over the Plankenbrug River (formerly Dwars River) in Stellenbosch is being rebuilt by Martin & East (Pty) Ltd with nine precast concrete beams supplied by Concrete Manufacturers Association member, Cape Concrete. Designed by Infrastructure consultancy, AECOM SA (Pty) Ltd, the first of this two-phase project was completed in August and the second is scheduled for completion in December 2022.

Brownstone coarse-exposed aggregate pavers, supplied by Concrete Manufacturers Association member, C.E.L. Paving Products, have formed part of the rehabilitation of Trunk Road 31, a 13.4km pass which cuts through Cogmanskloof situated between Ashton and Montagu on the Western Cape’s renowned R62 route between Oudtshoorn and Robertson.

The City of Cape Town has embarked on a project to bolster the City’s water supply by accessing groundwater from the Table Mountain Group (TMG) Aquifer in the area surrounding the existing Steenbras Dam. Situated, in the Steenbras Nature Reserve in the Hottentots Hollands Mountain range, the dam is one of several essential water reservoirs supplying the city.
