Click To EnlargeA film-based guide which provides A-Z practical instruction on how to lay concrete building blocks is now available from the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) on CD.

Aimed mainly at contractors, the CD can also be used to train unskilled workers in the art of successful concrete block laying. It begins by outlining the necessary tools such as trowels, jointers, profiles and levels and demonstrates how they are applied.

The various types of blocks and the manner in which they are used is covered as is mortar and its correct preparation. However, the main emphasis is on the laying of blocks, and advanced block laying techniques, such as the building in of door-frames, sill blocks, lintel blocks and window frames, are also covered.

CMA, director, John Cairns, says although not difficult, it is essential concrete block laying be done correctly. Poor or incorrect laying technique results in cracking, leaking, low strength properties and ill-fitting fixtures, with the end result that expensive correctional measures have to be taken at some stage.
