SEMINARS DEMONSTRATE HUGE INTEREST IN HOLLOW-CORE SLABS FOR MULTI-STOREY BUILDINGS :

Article Date: 08 November 2009

Click To EnlargeIf there was any doubt as to the huge level of professional interest in how prestressed and reinforced precast concrete hollow-core slabs can be used as an alternative flooring material for multi-storey buildings, it was dispelled in October when over 250 engineers, architects and property developers attended two seminars on the subject.

Staged by the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA), the first took place in Port Elizabeth on October 7 and the second in Cape Town on October 8 . Earlier in the year over 120 people attended the same seminar in Midrand.

Seen here during the Port Elizabeth seminar are: Kgomotso Modise (left), operations manager of Echo Prestress; John Cairns, CMA director; Monique Eggebeen, managing director of Echo Prestress; Victor Booth, consulting engineer; Daniel Petrov, technical director of Echo Prestress; and David Higson-Smith consulting engineer for Echo Prestress.

The seminars also focused on hollow-core slab technology and demonstrated how in situ columns and beams can be used in combination with precast hollow-core flooring to achieve a monolithic, structurally sound building.

Other topics included: history and design philosophy; general design; composite floors; case studies; health and safety aspects; and alternative applications such as, foundation systems, security and retaining walls, attenuation tanks and reservoir roofs.

INDIGENOUS VEGETATION FOR CRB WALLING – THE ROUTE TO GO ADVISES THE CMA

One of the more rewarding features of concrete retaining block (CRB) walls is the plant life which, when properly chosen, flourishes in the numerous soil-filled crevasses presented by these structures.
